A Post for My Dad

EEK! I've only been at this blogging business less than a month and I'm falling behind.

My dad turned 59 this past week. I used to think that 50 was dinosaur-ish. Now both my parents are rapidly approaching 60. It's very surreal. My mom had me when my parents were 35, so I don't really remember them before their 40s. Which is kind of weird when you have those people whose parents had them when they were in their early 20s.

My Dad is a pediatrician. He has an absolute, God-given gift with children. I don't mean to be sappy, but it's really beautiful. You can take any crying baby and put it in his arms and the baby is instantly quiet. I'm not exaggerating here, I've seen it happen on multiple occasions.

Babies love his beard. They grab at it and love to feel the texture of it against their skin.

Sometimes I think he can talk to them. He can communicate with them in a way that transcends words. When I'm watching him hold a baby, making it laugh, calming it down, I know that is his calling. He's one of those people who can make a 4-year-old throwing a tantrum quiet down with JUST a look, faster than you can say "spanking". When I used to babysit and the kids would be running around like wild indians, I would get my dad on the phone and have him talk to them and they would be perfect for the rest of the night.

And if I ever have unruly children, I'm shipping them off to him.

I think my Dad is pretty cool.

cool that your dad is so good with babies. I'm glad you're blogging it up. I added you to mine so that I can lurk around yours on a regular basis.
say- graham had a my space and then he didn't- what gives?
I got your messages and sweet card! I wish I hadn't missed you when you came by. So, since you and my grandparents work out together- can you bench more than my grandma?
